Form triangles. When you are next to the ball, get a position ready to receive a pass by forming a perfect triangle with the two nearest defenders. This puts you in a position of maximum danger to them, since both will have to take you when you receive the ball, thus forcing the zone to scramble to guard each pass (and commit two defenders to the ball whether it wants to or not).
From Dick’s book Stuff
Here’s a clip of him talking about the same stuff.
Makes perfect sense. The issue I see is players standing. When the defense moves to react to ball movement, the perfect reception point changes. A lot of players stand in the same spot, especially people who simply like to shoot. “Gimme the ball, wide open for my shot!”
Good point Bill, the angles are constantly changing and good players develop an awareness of how to see those changes happening and flow with them. But in the process of making that a habit they’ll likely need reminders. Thanks Bill!
